Race Distances: Marathon and Half, 26.2 mile and 13.9 mile. Kid's 1k (free).
Distance/Elevation Gain: 13.9 miles with 3,100 feet of climbing.
The Bellingham Half Marathon is really special: it is a point-to-point exploration of Bellingham's Chuckanut Mountain and Lake Padden Trails. It begins by running up Fragrance Lake Trail to the notorious Chinscraper and along the super technical and scenic Ridge Trail with views of the Cascades, city of Bellingham, and Bellingham Bay. From the ridge, you'll descend on some sweet single track to the Interurban Trail, hit up a little road on your way to Lake Padden, and finish with fast trails around Lake Padden to a post race meal and race festivities! Please note that runners must take a bus (or get a ride to the start) since it's a point to point course. Buses leaves lake Padden Park at 8:15am sharp.
The marathon is a stunning mix of trail running in Bellingham with lots of tough climbs on single track trails, as well as fast interurban trails. The race has approximately 5,000 feet of climbing and connects two of the most popular trail systems, Lake Padden and Chuckanut Mountain. Runners will enjoy lake and forest views through Padden Park and expansive views of the city of Bellingham, the Cascade Mountain range, and Bellingham Bay from Chuckanut Ridge.
The marathon starts at Lake Padden and runs clockwise around the lake to 36th Street and Old Fairhaven Parkway where runners will get on the Interurban Trail. From there, the race goes onto the scenic Hemlock Trail, Lost Lake Trail, Black Diamond Trail and reaches to top of Chuckanut Mountain on Cleater Road. From there, runners will get on the fun and technical Chuckanut Ridge Trail with views of the Cascades and the city of Bellingham. After the ridge the race drops down to Lost Lake Trail again and follows the Interurban Trail back to the short road section returning to Lake Padden and continuing clockwise around the lake to the finish by the parking area/picnic shelter.
*For the marathon: Please note that runners must follow the rules of the road on the short road section from Lake Padden to the Interurban. We will not be stopping traffic for you. We will have crossing guards at key intersections to make sure that runners are safe, but it is up to runners to follow rules of the road, which might mean stopping and waiting for a light. If we do a good job this year, we will be able to get permits for the next year. Thank you!
Marathon Race is limited to 200 runners, Half is limited to 200 as well. Sign up early to guarantee entry in the races.
Prices: Included in your race entry fee is a t-shirt, finisher medal, a fully marked course you can easily follow, five well stocked aid stations and a post race party with food, drinks, and snacks. We also offer cotton t-shirts for $35, Hoodies for $55. Merchandise can be purchased during online registration or on site at the race.

*The Marathon starts and finishes at the SAME location. The Half Marathon is a POINT-TO-POINT run and it starts in a different location than it finishes. The Half starts out in Larrabee State Park and finishes at Lake Padden (with the full). We have a free bus for Half runners needing a ride to the start. The Full Marathon does not need the bus as it starts and finishes in same location.
Half Marathon Start: 9am at Lost Lake Beach Parking Area** Right across from Larrabee State park (on the east side of Chuckanut Drive. Address for Larrabee is 245 Chuckanut Drive Bellingham, WA
Half Marathon Finish: Lake Padden Park, 4882 Samish Way, Bellingham WA 98226. It's the East Entrance to the park.
*Bus: (HALF MARATHON ONLY) All runners take bus (or get a ride from friend/family is fine too) to Lost Lake Parking area, where race starts at Larrabee State Park in the Lost Lake Parking area. Please let us know if you won't be taking the bus. Runners may not leave a car at Lost Lake parking. Runners will leave their vehicles at Lake Padden Park where they will take the bus to Larrabee State Park. Bus leaves at 8:15am sharp from Lake Padden park. See map. Race begins at Lost Lake Parking at 9am. Pre race briefing at 8:50am.
HALF MARATHON Race Check In/Bib/Shirt Pickup: (3 options, read carefully)

You will still have to check in race morning so we have the most accurate roster of starters. You can also pickup your bib number/shirt the morning of the race without going to the Friday check in, please plan to arrive early if checking in race morning (check in race morning from 6:30am-8am).
2. If you are taking the bus to the start (Half Only): check in from 6:30-8am* at Lake Padden Park. All runners must check in. You may check in at Lost Lake Parking (start location) if you already picked up your bib on Friday. *Note that buses leave to go to the start location at exactly 8:15am sharp. It's your responsibility to arrive early enough to catch the bus.
3. Check in at Lost Lake Parking (half marathon start) Only for runners who checked in at the Friday Packet Pickup at Fairhaven Runners and just need to check in race morning we will have a check in at Lost Lake Parking as well. Runners taking this option should arrive at Lost Lake Parking by 8:30am, at the LATEST.
Pre Race Talk (Half): Lost Lake parking at 8:50am. Race director will brief runners about the course and any updates.
Pre Race Talk (Full): 7:15/7:20 at Lake Padden Start
Early Start Option: None available. We made the event start earlier this year so we do not have an early start option. We apologize for any inconvenience.
Cut off: The marathon has an 8.5 hour time limit, 4pm at the finish. This is a generous time limit due to the difficulty of the race. The half cut off is 7 hours at the finish line, also 4pm.
Check in and bib pickup starts at 6:30am-7:15am for marathon runners at Lake Padden, 6:30-8am for Half at Lake Padden, if you're a half marathoner catching the bus. Half runners can also pickup their bibs at their start location at Lost Lake Parking. All runners must check in race morning. You can pickup your packets the afternoon before the race at Packet Pickup at Fairhaven Runners. You will still need to check in race morning. We have to keep track f all runners, so we need to know that you started the race and where you are on the course.
Please carpool, ride your bike, fly, swim, whatever it takes! Parking is limited.
Aid Stations: Please note that aid stations are placed more like they are for an ultra marathon than a road marathon. They are between 3 to 8 miles apart and for your safety, we recommend that you carry some water, food, and layers of clothing between aid stations. All aid stations have water, electrolyte drink, energy gels, snacks, candy, fruit, soda and PB&J.
HALF MARATHON Aid Stations:
Aid 1: Chinscraper, mile 2
Aid 2: Interurban, mile 9.8, cut off time is 3pm (6 hrs)
Aid 3: Padden Gorge, mile 12
Finish: mile 13.9, cut off is 4pm
Half Marathon Cut off times: Due to the half marathon running on much of the same course as the full marathon, cut off time for the half marathon are VERY generous. The only cut off will be at Interurban Aid Station at mile 9.8, 3pm, and the Finish line at 4pm. All runners must be to the finish by 4pm (that's 7 hours total).
MARATHON AID STATIONS & Crew Access: (miles are approximations)
AID #1 Padden Gorge at mile 5**No drop bags. Aid station is where 36th street meets the Padden Gorge Trail. Crew access allowed, but crew must park in legal parking spots. There is NO parking at the aid station itself. Crew will have to park and walk to aid.
AID #2 Interurban at mile 7** Drop Bags Allowed where the Interurban Trail meets Old Samish Way. Crew access allowed, but crew must park in legal parking spots. There is NO parking at the aid station. Crew can park at North Chuckanut Trail head or in designated parking along Old Samish Way and walk to the Aid station.
AID #3 Chinscraper at mile 15 Drop bags allowed. Cut off time: 12:30pm (5hrs). If runners don't make it to this aid station by 12:30pm, they will have to stop. Where South Lost lake Trail meets Double Black Diamond Trail. NO CREW ACCESS.
AID #4 Interurban mile 22** Drop Bags Allowed Cut off at 3pm (7.5hrs). This aid station is where the Interurban Trail meets Old Samish Way. Crew access allowed, but crew must park in legal parking spots. There is NO parking at the aid station. Crew can park at North Chuckanut Trailhead or in designated parking along Old Samish Way and walk to the Aid station.
AID #5 Padden Gorge at mile 24** No Drop Bags. No cut off time. Where 36th street meets the Padden Gorge Trail. Crew access allowed, but crew must park in legal parking spots. There is no parking at the aid station itself. Crew will have to park and walk to aid.
**CREW ACCESS: only Aid Station 1, 2, 4 and 5. Crew must park and walk to aid station. No parking at aid stations. WARNING: If crew doesn't follow these directions they can disqualify their runner!
Drop Bags (MARATHON ONLY): Allowed at Aid 2, 3, and 4. Be sure to pick up your drop bags after the event. We do not mail drop bags. Drop bags are not necessary, however some runners like to have certain items at aid like a particular gel or bar. Drop bags are only collected race morning from 6am-7:15am.
Cut off times (MARATHON):
Please adhere to cut off times. We cannot have runners out after dark. If you don't make by cut off, you won't be able to finish by dark.
Aid #3, mile 15 at 12:30pm. That gives runners 5 hours to get to mile 15.
Aid #4, mile 22 at 3pm. You have 7.5 hours to get to mile 22.
Finish: 4pm cut off time, that's 8.5hrs
T-Shirts: Gender Specific T-shirts are included in your registration, however you must pick your shirt up at the race. We do not mail shirts. If you do not pick up your shirt at the race you forfeit it.
Hoodies: Comfortable cotton hoodies with race logo for $55. Unisex S-XXL. Purchase on ultrasignup when registering or at the race. We also offer cotton T-shirts for $35! See online registration or get one day of rae if there are extras!
Medals/Prizes: All marathon & half finishers receive a unique medal. Must have an official finish to receive your medal. 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in the men's and women's race receive commemorative awards. No age group awards, sorry.
Get into the race for FREE or at a discount! Bring a volunteer. We need volunteers and if you coerce, aka convince, a friend or family member to volunteer, you can get into the race for free or at a discount depending on the volunteer's time commitment. Discount/free entries are gifts that we give as a thank you to our volunteers and are at the discretion of the race management. Please contact us for details. Know the race course: You are responsible for knowing the course. We will mark the course very well with ribbons and signs, but there is always the possibility that someone will tamper with markers, you might run past a key turn, or that you might still come to an intersection where you are unsure how to proceed. You can always print out a map and bring it with you on race day to refer to if you are unsure. Studying the maps can keep you from getting off course on race day.
